Formic acid, with the chemical formula HCOOH, finds extensive application in industries such as pesticides, leather processing, dyeing and printing of textiles, medicine production and rubber manufacturing. It can be directly employed for fabric treatment and tanning processes as well as storage of green feed. Additionally, it serves as a metal surface treatment agent, industrial solvent and rubber additive. In organic synthesis procedures, formic acid is utilized to synthesize various medical intermediates including acridine dyes and formamide series.
1.Pharmaceutical industry:
Caffeine, Anemone, Aminopyrine, Aminophylline, Theobromine Borneol, Vitamin B1, Metronidazole and Mebendazole are commonly used in this field.
2. Pesticide industry:
Powder rust, triazolone, tricyclozole, triamidazole, triazophos, polybulozole, tenobulozole, insecticidal ether and dicofol trichloride are among the chemicals commonly used in this field.
3. Chemical industry
Calcium formate, sodium formate, ammonium formate, potassium formate, ethyl formate, barium formate, dimethylformamide (DMF), formamide, rubber antioxidant, pentaerythritol (PE), neopentarglycol (NPG), epoxy soybean oil (ESO), epoxy octyl soybean oil (EOSO), te valeryl chloride (TVC), paint remover, phenolic resin and pickling steel plate are among the chemicals included.
4. Leather industry
Tanning preparation, deashing agent and neutralizer for leather can be utilized to enhance the quality of leather products.
5. Rubber industry
Improved version: Coagulant for natural rubber.
6. Carbon monoxide production
Chemical formula: HCOOH= (concentrated H2SO4 catalysis) heating =CO+H2O
7. Reducing agent
Arsenic, bismuth, aluminum, copper, gold, indium, iron, lead, manganese, mercury, molybdenum, silver and zinc were quantified. Cerium, rhenium and tungsten were assayed. Aromatic primary and secondary amines underwent testing. Solvent was employed for determination of relative molecular weight and crystallization. Methoxy was measured. It served as fixative in microscopic analysis while formates were produced.

It can also serve as a mordant in printing and dyeing, a dyeing agent for fibers and paper, a treatment agent, a plasticizer, a food preservative, and an animal feed additive.
